Uganda’s President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has instructed the Inspector General of Government (IGG) and the Minister of Integrity to provide details on whether the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, declared ownership of properties in the UK in her Leadership Code forms.

He stated that while the existence of the speaker’s bank accounts is not a significant concern if the funds were legitimately earned and used to support her children’s overseas education, he emphasized the importance of transparency. Museveni highlighted that if the Speaker had declared her properties, the main issue would be the source of funds for acquiring them.

Museveni questioned the rationale behind Ugandan leaders investing in properties over seas, emphasizing that the country needs such investments. He labeled it a moral and ideological mistake.

Furthermore, Museveni expressed concerns to the British High Commissioner regarding sanctions against Ugandan officials Kitutu and Nandutu, related to the “mabaati saga.” Museveni conveyed his conviction that alleged thefts discovered by Ugandan agencies are being addressed within the country’s legal system and noted that the accused are yet to be convicted. He emphasized his puzzlement over foreign intervention in internal matters and requested the Attorney-General’s advice on this issue.

The president’s letter was also addressed to the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, the Attorney-General, Ambassador Minisha Madhvani, the IGG, and the Minister of State for Integrity.
