Ownership And Funding Transparency
The New Light Paper believes readers have a right to know who owns and funds the publications they read. This page sets out our ownership structure, our sources of revenue, and the principles we follow to keep our funding separate from our editorial decisions.
Ownership
The New Light Paper is a digital news publication operated and published by New Light Communications U Limited, a limited liability company registered in the Republic of Uganda.
New Light Communications U Limited is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Koom Holdings U Limited, the parent company, also registered in the Republic of Uganda. Koom Holdings U Limited oversees the broader operations of the group, which includes media and technology ventures.
Both companies operate under Ugandan corporate law and are subject to the regulatory requirements of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau.
Founder and Leadership
The New Light Paper was founded on 25th July 2020 by Gad Masereka, who is the Founder and Managing Director of New Light Communications U Limited and the ultimate owner of Koom Holdings U Limited. He retains full ownership of both companies.
Day-to-day administration is led by Kabugho Rahab as General Manager. Editorial direction is led independently by Mukidi Hannington, the Editor-in-Chief.
A full breakdown of our team is available on our About Us page.
Funding Sources
The New Light Paper is funded through the following revenue streams:
Advertising
We display advertisements on our website through third-party networks, including Google AdSense and other approved advertising partners. Advertising rates and placements are managed by our commercial team, separately from our editorial newsroom.
Sponsored Content and Paid Features
We accept sponsored content, paid editorial features, and brand partnerships. All such content is clearly labelled as “Sponsored Content” and published under our dedicated Sponsored Content category. Payment for sponsored content does not influence our news coverage.
Self-Funding by the Owner
In addition to advertising and sponsored content revenue, the publication is supported by reinvested earnings from its parent group, Koom Holdings U Limited. The Founder and Managing Director also invests personal resources to sustain operations as the publication grows.
No External Investors
At present, The New Light Paper has no external shareholders, no donor funding, no government grants, and no political party affiliation. If this position changes, we will update this page to reflect any new sources of funding.
What We Do Not Accept
To protect our editorial independence and credibility, The New Light Paper does not accept:
Funding from political parties or politicians in exchange for coverage
Payments from government bodies in exchange for favourable reporting
Gifts, bribes, or inducements to publish, suppress, or shape a story
Investment that would require us to surrender editorial control to a third party
These principles apply to the company, the editorial team, and every reporter who writes for us. They are also set out in detail in our Editorial Policy.
Separation of Business and Editorial
A clear separation exists between the commercial side of the company and the editorial newsroom:
The Founder and Managing Director and the General Manager are responsible for business operations, advertising, commercial partnerships, and the company’s financial decisions.
The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for editorial decisions, including what stories are published, how they are framed, and when they are corrected or retracted.
Advertisers and sponsors do not have access to our newsroom and do not have editorial input on our news coverage. This separation is described in more detail in our Editorial Policy.
Political Affiliations
The New Light Paper has no formal affiliation with any political party in Uganda or abroad. We cover political events, parties, and personalities as part of our journalism, but we are not aligned with or funded by any political organization.
Our reporters and editors are expected to disclose any political activity, party membership, or relationship that could compromise their reporting on political matters. The Editor-in-Chief manages potential conflicts of interest.
Religious and Other Affiliations
The publication has no formal affiliation with any religious institution, civil society organization, or interest group. Our coverage of religious, social, and cultural matters is conducted independently and follows the same editorial standards as the rest of our reporting.
Transparency in Sponsored Content
When we publish sponsored content, paid editorial features, or advertorials, we label them clearly so that readers can distinguish them from independent journalism. Sponsored content is published under the Sponsored Content category and includes a disclosure statement.
This labelling reflects our commitment to honesty with our readers about what is independent reporting and what is paid content.
Updates to This Page
We will update this page when there are material changes to our ownership, funding, or corporate structure. The “Last updated” date at the bottom of this page shows when it was last revised.
