Sudhir, Maponga and Pan-African Voices Take Centre Stage At PAP Global Awards

KAMPALA: The Pan-African Pyramid Global Awards did more than distribute trophies at Speke Resort Munyonyo. It assembled a cross-section of African and diaspora voices around a set of questions that are becoming increasingly central to the continent’s future.

The ninth edition of the awards and the organisation’s 12th anniversary dinner attracted hundreds of guests on August 29, including business leaders, activists, politicians and representatives of the African diaspora.

Dr Sudhir Ruparelia attended as Guest of Honour, while the programme featured prominent Pan-African voices from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ghana, Jamaica and the United States.

Among them were Bishop Joshua Maponga, Dr Khanyisile Litchfield Tshabalala, Ambassador Clinton Arko Agyemang, Blossom Thomas and Ayo Kimathi.

Their backgrounds were different, but the discussion converged on a familiar concern: Africa’s ability to determine its own future.

The keynote address by Bishop Maponga provided the intellectual centre of the evening. Discussions also examined refugees, economic sovereignty, decoloniality and the effects of what speakers characterised as new colonialism.

Those subjects gave the awards an unusual depth.

Rather than treating Pan-Africanism simply as a historical movement, the event presented it as a continuing development project — one that must confront contemporary questions of ownership, production, trade, governance and social responsibility.

The awards reinforced that message.

Rajiv Ruparelia was honoured posthumously for humanitarian work, while Dr Tshabalala was recognised for her contribution to the anti-apartheid struggle.

Dr Frank Mugyenyi received recognition linked to African mineral sovereignty and governance. Ambassador Agyemang was recognised for youth entrepreneurship and development, and Blossom Thomas for African Renaissance leadership in the diaspora.

Victoria Sugar received the African Development Entrepreneur Award, MTN Uganda was recognised as a Lifetime Achiever and Prince Wasajja Kiwanuka received the African Renaissance Award.

The range of recipients suggests that PAP’s definition of Pan-African contribution is deliberately broad.

It includes those who defend freedom, those who create businesses and jobs, those who advocate for African control of natural resources, those who invest in communities and those who build links between Africans on the continent and in the diaspora.

That approach also places private enterprise alongside activism and public leadership.

For Uganda, the presence of international delegates at Munyonyo was significant. Pan-African debate has traditionally been associated with political centres, but business and hospitality venues are increasingly becoming spaces where economic ideas are exchanged and partnerships are formed.

The setting itself therefore mattered.

Speke Resort, owned by the Ruparelia Group, hosted not only an awards dinner but a gathering of people discussing how Africans can increase their influence over the resources, markets and institutions that shape their lives.

The evening ended with dinner, music and celebration, but the underlying message was less festive.

Africa’s development will not be determined by slogans.

It will depend on whether ideas about sovereignty, integration and self-reliance can be converted into functioning businesses, stronger institutions, competitive industries and opportunities for ordinary citizens.

The PAP Global Awards offered recognition to those already working in that direction.

The larger question is whether such recognition can help build a culture in which practical African achievement becomes the norm rather than the exception.
