Muhoozi Thanks Sudhir Ruparelia for Backing His 2031 Presidential Bid
Businessman Sudhir Ruparelia became one of the most prominent private sector figures in the latest Patriotic League of Uganda mobilisation after publicly endorsing Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba for the 2031 presidential election.
According to reports from Daily Monitor and other Ugandan outlets, the two businessmen signed endorsement registers backing Kainerugaba during activities linked to PLU, the organisation chaired by the General. The endorsement formed part of a wider mobilisation effort around his expected presidential ambitions.
Two days later, Kainerugaba posted a message on X thanking the businessmen for their support. His message described them as his big brothers and said he would not forget the support they had shown him.
The endorsement places a prominent section of Kampala’s business community within an increasingly visible political conversation about the 2031 succession. Daily Monitor reported that other business figures and former opposition politicians had also associated themselves with the PLU mobilisation effort.
The political significance of the development remains tied to the status of Kainerugaba, who is an active military officer and serves as Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces. Reports have noted that questions around the timing and legal framework of any formal presidential campaign remain relevant while he remains in military service.
Ruparelia has previously appeared at events associated with Kainerugaba and earlier in 2026 was reported to have contributed Shs100 million to the General’s Run for Hope charity initiative. The two have also had a public association through business and social events, while Kainerugaba has spoken publicly about his relationship with the Ruparelia family.
The latest endorsement is therefore part of a broader relationship that has developed over time rather than an isolated public appearance. It also illustrates the intersection between prominent private sector figures and Uganda’s emerging political mobilisation around the 2031 election cycle.
PLU has said its activities are focused on building support for Kainerugaba, while political observers continue to watch how the movement develops and how the involvement of business leaders shapes the wider public debate.
For the moment, the episode is best understood as a documented political endorsement and a public response from Kainerugaba. Its longer term implications will depend on subsequent political, legal and electoral developments before the 2031 election.
