Sudhir Ruparelia Leads Push To Turn India Day into a Healthcare Lifeline

KAMPALA. A cultural celebration that has become one of the most visible annual meetings between Uganda and its Indian community is taking on a more serious purpose this year, with organisers planning to use India Day 2026 to help children with severe heart conditions and Ugandans affected by cataracts.

The Indian Association of Uganda will hold Plascon India Day on October 3 at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, bringing together members of the Indian community, government officials, business leaders and members of the public. The event, backed by businessman Dr Sudhir Ruparelia and supported by several companies, will combine music, food and cultural performances with a humanitarian programme aimed at delivering specialised medical care.

At the centre of the programme are about 160 children below the age of five who suffer from serious heart conditions. The organisers say the children will be taken to India for specialised treatment, with assistance also extending to their post operative care. A further 1,000 people are expected to benefit from cataract operations in different parts of Uganda.

Indian Association of Uganda chairperson Paresh Mehta said the organisers wanted the celebration to produce a lasting benefit rather than end when the music stops and the guests leave the grounds. He said the intention was to celebrate culture while also making a practical difference in people’s lives.

The programme builds on an initiative that has increasingly linked Uganda India cultural relations with community support. Kansai Plascon Uganda, one of the leading corporate partners, said it had previously committed resources to heart surgery and would again support the programme this year. Managing director Dr Santosh Gumte said the company had committed to another 100 heart surgeries, following a similar pledge the previous year.

The company is also supporting the cataract programme. Other partners include Tembo Steel Uganda, Tyre Express Uganda, Bank of Baroda, Airtel Uganda and other businesses. Their participation reflects a broader shift in corporate social responsibility, in which companies are increasingly expected to show how their resources affect communities beyond their commercial operations.

Victoria University vice chancellor Dr Lawrence Muganga welcomed the initiative, arguing that restoring someone’s sight or giving a child with a serious heart condition a chance at a healthier life reaches far beyond the hospital. Such interventions can change a person’s ability to learn, work and contribute to family and community life.

The humanitarian campaign does not replace the cultural character of India Day. Indian music, traditional cuisine, dance and entertainment will remain central to the programme, with Bollywood singer Neha Kakkar expected to headline the celebration. The combination is deliberate because organisers want the event to preserve its role as a celebration of heritage while using the occasion to build solidarity around practical needs in Uganda.

The Indian Association of Uganda has existed since 1904 and has long been involved in cultural exchange and community activities. Its continued role in organising India Day reflects the long history of the Indian community in Uganda and the increasingly broad relationships connecting business, culture, education and philanthropy.

India Day 2026 therefore arrives with two audiences in mind. The first will come to celebrate a shared cultural connection. The second will be watching to see whether the pledges translate into actual operations, treatment and recovery for the people identified by the humanitarian programme. If the planned interventions take place, the celebration will demonstrate how cultural diplomacy can become a vehicle for measurable public good.
