As the driver departed the scene right away following the collision, some of the victims made frantic attempts to jump off the truck in an effort to escape death.

As an eyewitness named Joseph Niwaha recalled, “I heard cries for help and rushed to the scene, finding survivors in dire need of assistance.” According to Johnson Tulinawe, a different witness, “the bodies of the deceased individuals were trapped beneath the vehicle when the first rescue team arrived.”
