A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier has been shot dead following a dispute over a Shs2,000 entrance fee, in an incident that has shocked residents and raised fresh concerns about the use of firearms in public spaces.

The deceased has been identified by police as Akugizibwe Mbaale, 35, a UPDF officer who was reportedly on leave at the time of the incident. According to preliminary police reports, the fatal shooting followed an argument linked to payment of an entrance fee at a local entertainment venue.

Witnesses say a confrontation broke out after disagreements over the small fee escalated into a heated exchange.

The situation reportedly turned violent when a firearm was discharged, fatally wounding Mbaale. He was rushed for medical attention but later succumbed to his injuries.

Police have since launched investigations to establish the exact sequence of events and determine who fired the fatal shot.

Authorities say several individuals are being questioned, and statements from witnesses are being recorded as part of ongoing inquiries.

Security officials have urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue, while also warning against the misuse of firearms and the escalation of minor disputes into deadly confrontations.

The UPDF has yet to release a detailed statement regarding the death of the officer, but sources indicate the army is closely monitoring the investigation.
