Kotido LCV Chairperson Appeals to Mufti as Karamoja Hunger Crisis Deepens
By Richard Onapatum
KOTIDO – Kotido District LCV Chairperson Lotee Paul Komol has appealed to His Eminence Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, to support efforts to address the worsening hunger situation affecting communities across the Karamoja region.
Komol made the appeal during a visit to the Mufti’s offices, where he discussed the growing food crisis affecting vulnerable households in Kotido and the wider Karamoja sub-region.
During the engagement, Komol highlighted the challenges facing communities following prolonged dry spells, poor agricultural production and declining household food stocks.
In response, the Mufti called upon Muslims across the country to mobilise food and other essential support for people affected by hunger in Karamoja.
The Mufti urged Muslims and other well-wishers to demonstrate solidarity with vulnerable families by contributing towards the hunger response.
The appeal comes amid growing concern over the scale of food insecurity in Karamoja.
According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification assessment, approximately 473,000 people, representing 32 percent of the analysed population in Karamoja, are facing acute food insecurity, with about 41,000 people experiencing Emergency levels of food insecurity.
Kotido is among the districts affected by the crisis, alongside Kaabong, Karenga, Moroto and Nabilatuk.
The food crisis has been linked to prolonged dry spells, poor harvests, climate-related shocks and declining household livelihoods, leaving many families struggling to secure adequate food.
Government and other stakeholders have continued to mobilise emergency assistance for affected communities, but local leaders say more support is needed to meet the immediate needs of vulnerable households.
Komol’s engagement with the Mufti is part of efforts to broaden mobilisation for the hunger response by involving religious institutions and other influential stakeholders.
The LCV Chairperson has continued to call upon government, development partners, humanitarian agencies, religious institutions, the private sector and well-wishers to join efforts to support communities affected by hunger.
The Mufti’s appeal is expected to mobilise wider support from the Muslim community as efforts continue to respond to the food crisis and strengthen the resilience of communities across Karamoja.
