Dr. Sudhir Insists Jobs, Not Riches, Drive His Endless Investments
Ugandan billionaire and investor Dr Sudhir Ruparelia has declared that the force propelling his continued investments is not a hunger for more personal wealth but a determination to create employment for thousands of Ugandans.
Speaking during an interview on Radio Walla, the businessman said job creation had remained at the core of his investment decisions throughout his career, even long after he had achieved considerable financial success.
He made the remarks while responding to a question on why he keeps expanding his business empire when he already ranks among the wealthiest individuals in the country.
“My main motive is to create jobs. Society out there needs jobs,” he said, a statement that drew applause from an audience that read it as a reflection of the broader role private investors play in the economy.
In Dr Sudhir’s view, the worth of a business should be measured not only by its profits but by the number of livelihoods it sustains, and he noted that large projects carry the power to generate employment both directly and indirectly across many sectors.
He used the interview to revisit some of the decisions that shaped his journey, dwelling in particular on his early purchases of land in Munyonyo.
Sharing a personal anecdote, he recalled buying land in the area years ago when few people could see its future value, recounting how even members of his own family questioned the wisdom of the move.
He remembered how his son, then only five years old, jokingly fretted that he was spending too much money on land and putting the family’s finances at risk.
In hindsight, he said, the gamble turned out to be one of the most important of his career, as Munyonyo grew into one of Kampala’s most prestigious and valuable addresses.
Today the area hosts several landmarks tied to the Ruparelia Group, among them Speke Resort Munyonyo, the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort and the International Conference Centre, facilities that have helped cement Munyonyo as a leading hub for tourism, hospitality, international events and business conferences.
Dr Sudhir argued that successful investing often calls for patience, long-term thinking and the courage to spot opportunities before they become obvious to everyone else, an outlook that has guided the growth of his group into one of the largest privately owned conglomerates in East Africa.
Beyond the financial returns, he maintained, the deepest satisfaction comes from watching businesses create jobs, support communities and contribute to national development.
