Deputy RDC Tightens Oversight as OPM Relief Food Arrives in Karenga

By Richard Onapatum

KARENGA – Authorities in Karenga District have intensified oversight of the government relief food programme following the arrival of food supplies from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), with district leaders pledging transparency and accountability throughout the distribution process.

The Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Deputy RDC Ronald Kedi Ongodia, the District Internal Security Officer (DISO), the District Police Commander (DPC), and the Commanding Officer of the 47 Battalion, Maj. Okune, conducted a joint inspection of the food consignment during its delivery and offloading at Karenga District headquarters.

The inspection involved verifying the quantity and quality of the relief supplies before they are distributed to registered beneficiary households across the district.

Speaking during the exercise, Deputy RDC Ronald Kedi said the district leadership is determined to ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive the food without bias or irregularities.

“We are going to make sure that relief food reaches all registered beneficiary households. Our priority is to ensure fair and transparent allocation without discrimination while strengthening coordination among government institutions and partners involved in the exercise,” Kedi said.

He added that the district has put in place measures to maintain accurate beneficiary and stock records to guarantee accountability throughout the distribution process.

“We shall maintain proper records and prevent diversion, theft, fraud and any other forms of malpractice that could undermine the government’s intervention,” he said.

Maj. Okune of the 47 Battalion emphasized the role of security agencies in safeguarding the food supplies and supporting a smooth distribution process.

District officials said the joint verification exercise demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring public resources reach the intended beneficiaries, especially as communities continue to recover from the effects of prolonged drought and food insecurity in Karamoja.

The Office of the Prime Minister has been implementing relief food interventions across the Karamoja sub-region to support vulnerable households affected by recurring drought and poor harvests.

Relief food distribution in Karenga is expected to commence after the verification exercise is completed and beneficiary lists are confirmed.
