The Intelligent Transport Monitoring System –ITMS- has received 10,000 electronic components to address the nationwide shortage of digital number plates with officials expressing confidence that the current backlog will be cleared by August 2026.
Production of digital number plates is ongoing with priority being given to first time vehicle and Motorcycle registrations, including newly purchased vehicles, bonded operators, vehicle importers and clearing agents.
According to Novoselov Nikita, Director of Production and Installation at ITMS, the backlog of approximately 6,000 digital number plates will be cleared using the newly delivered electronic components.

He said ITMS remains committed to fulfilling the pledge made to the Minister of Works and Transport to clear the backlog within three weeks.
“We now have everything, including blanks, ready plates and the electronic components,” Nikita said.
Explaining the shortage, Nikita attributed the delays to disruptions in the global supply chain caused by the conflict in the Middle East. Although the electronic devices used in the number plates are imported from China, transportation challenges have slowed deliveries.

He stated that increased demand for cargo space on Ethiopia Airlines, which transports the components has led to delays, particularly for bulky shipments.
To prevent future shortages, ITMS has adopted alternative logistics arrangements including more frequent deliveries of electronic components to ensure continuous production.

Nikita also clarified that under post registration services, priority will be given to motorists whose digital number plates have been stolen, damaged or have developed technical faults.
Meanwhile, about 47,000 motorists have applied through the Ministry of Works and Transport for voluntary replacement of digital number plates. However, under the agreement between the Ministry and ITMS, only 100 number plates are currently issued daily for this category.
He said the pace of voluntary replacement will increase once sufficient stock becomes available allowing ITMS to meet demand while maintaining priority for first time registrations and replacement cases.
