PDM Magic: ONC Uncovers Luweero Woman Earning Millions From Chicks
The Office of the National Chairman has continued to document the impact of the Parish Development Model in Luweero, with its latest assessment uncovering yet another beneficiary whose life has been turned around by the government funds.
The ONC Coordinator for Greater Luweero, Ms Aminah Hassan, carried out the assessment in Gangama parish, Bombo, Luweero district, where she met Mrs Nabagala Ramlat, a mother who for years had relied on selling firewood to support her family.
For Mrs Nabagala, life had long meant setting aside whatever little she could from her modest trade, hoping to one day build something more secure. That hope took concrete shape when she received one million shillings under the programme and, rather than spread it thin, invested it in a broiler poultry business that has since transformed her household’s fortunes.
She began with two hundred chicks. Today that number has grown to five hundred, and the returns have moved her from the uncertainty of daily firewood sales into a steady and far more rewarding trade.
By her own account, the business now earns her between 2.5 and 2.8 million shillings a month, a figure that would have been unimaginable in her earlier circumstances.
Mrs Nabagala spoke of the change without hesitation, telling Ms Hassan that she had no regrets about joining the programme. The funds, she noted, had made a drastic difference in the life of her family, lifting her from mere survival to a position where she can plan and grow.
Her enthusiasm was matched by ambition, and she expressed hope that the government might consider topping up the support for committed beneficiaries like herself who are eager to expand.
Her praise, however, came with an honest concern. She pointed to the delays that beneficiaries often face in receiving the money, urging authorities to simplify and speed up the process so that more women in her position can access the funds and change their own lives.
For her, the lesson is clear. The willingness to work is already there, and what remains is to remove the hurdles that slow people down.
The Parish Development Model channels funds directly to households at the parish level, with the aim of pulling families out of subsistence living and into income-generating ventures. For women like Mrs Nabagala, who have long carried the weight of providing for their homes through modest means, the programme has opened a door that once seemed firmly shut.
As her poultry business continues to grow, and as the ONC sustains its monitoring across the district, her story stands as both a measure of what the programme can achieve and a reminder of the practical improvements that could help it reach even further.
