Fake Sudhir Ruparelia Accounts Flood X Platform Again, Public Urged To Stay Alert

A fresh wave of fake social media accounts impersonating businessman Dr Sudhir Ruparelia has surfaced on X, formerly Twitter, with cybersecurity experts warning the public to exercise caution as scammers continue to exploit the tycoon’s public profile for financial fraud.

A search for “Sudhir Ruparelia” on the platform returns multiple accounts bearing near-identical names, profile photographs and branding, several of which lack verification and display the hallmarks of fraudulent operation. The only confirmed legitimate account remains @sudhirruparelia, described as “Chairman Ruparelia Group of Companies Uganda.”

Experts say such impersonation accounts are typically used to run investment scams promising high returns, solicit money transfers, distribute phishing links disguised as business opportunities, or collect personal and financial information from victims who believe they are dealing with the genuine account holder. Warning signs in the current wave of accounts include misspelled usernames, unauthorised use of Ruparelia’s photographs, and low follower counts with little verifiable activity.

Sudhir has warned the public to avoid engaging with or sending money to any account claiming to represent him unless it bears verified status, to cross-check any claims through official Ruparelia Group channels, and to report suspicious accounts using X’s impersonation reporting tools. He also urged anyone who may have already engaged with such accounts to monitor their financial transactions and notify the Uganda Police Force Cybercrime Unit.

The persistence of these accounts despite previous takedowns points to the scale of the challenge facing both platform administrators and public figures who have become recurring targets of digital fraud in Uganda’s increasingly connected information environment.
