Over 300 residents of Kotido Municipality took part in a major community clean-up exercise organized by 91.2 Eko FM, aimed at improving sanitation and promoting environmental responsibility in key public areas.

The early morning campaign brought together residents, traders, boda boda riders, youth volunteers, municipal officials, business owners, and humanitarian volunteers, who worked collectively to clean Kotido’s main streets, the central market, the bus park, and major drainage channels across the municipality.

Equipped with gloves, spades, and sacks, participants collected heaps of garbage and cleared blocked drainage systems that had been affecting water flow and sanitation in busy trading and transport zones.

The exercise also drew participation from communities including Lokore Narikapet Ward in Central Division, Nakapelimoru, Patongor, Kanair, and Kanawat, reflecting wide community involvement in the initiative.

Health stakeholders welcomed the campaign, noting that improved sanitation helps reduce the spread of waterborne diseases and limits mosquito breeding, particularly in densely populated and high-traffic areas such as markets and taxi parks.

Speaking during the activity, Adingdong Steven Oketch, Station Manager of 91.2 Eko FM, said the initiative is part of the station’s broader mission to promote sanitation, unity, and community development through active citizen participation.

“We are trying to advocate for sanitation in the region. We appreciate everyone who joined us today, and we want people to continue working hand in hand for the good of our community,” Oketch said.

He noted that about 40 participants came from Lokore Narikapet Ward, describing it as a strong demonstration of community ownership and commitment to public health.

“I have learned that we cannot work alone. Community development requires unity and cooperation from everyone,” he added.

Oketch further emphasized that the clean-up campaign is not a one-time activity but part of a wider outreach programme by the radio station aimed at strengthening community engagement and development.

“We started with Kotido, but this activity will spread to other regions where Eko FM reaches,” he said.

Programs Director Lydia Wealth Apolot described the exercise as a successful volunteer-driven initiative that demonstrated the power of collective responsibility in improving living conditions.

“We rolled up our sleeves in this volunteer activity and had a very successful cleaning exercise. When we have a healthy environment, we have peace, and Eko is for peace and development,” she said.

Representatives from the boda boda community, including Samuel Obutu, said the exercise had helped restore order and improve working conditions in public transport areas.

Traders at Kotido central market also welcomed the initiative, noting that a clean environment attracts more customers and improves business performance.

One trader, Sherline, said the improved sanitation had already made a visible difference in the market environment.

“The market is now much cleaner. Customers feel comfortable coming here, and it also improves our business environment,” she said.

By midday, several clogged drainage channels had been fully cleared, restoring proper water flow in critical parts of the municipality. Participants expressed satisfaction with the progress made, noting that the exercise had created immediate visible impact.

Authorities from Kotido Municipality supported the activity by providing tools and logistical assistance, while police officers were praised for ensuring safety, coordination, and order throughout the exercise.

Oketch further announced that Eko FM will extend its community outreach beyond sanitation. On April 28, the station team will visit Kotido General Hospital, including maternity, children’s, and general wards, to interact with patients, offer counseling, and donate essential items such as soap and sugar.

“As a community radio station, we want to be with the community. We are helping bridge the gap between communities and social institutions,” he said.

The campaign reinforced a strong message that cleanliness is not only essential for public health, but also a foundation for dignity, economic activity, and sustainable development in Kotido Municipality.
