Sudhir Ruparelia Unveils Major Kabira Country Club Redevelopment Plan
By Gad Masereka
Ugandan property magnate Sudhir Ruparelia has unveiled an ambitious redevelopment plan for Kabira Country Club that will transform the long established leisure centre into a modern high rise hospitality and residential complex, signalling a major shift in the skyline of Kampala’s Bukoto area.
Architectural concepts released this week show a dramatic redesign of the property, replacing its current low rise structures with a modern skyline featuring high rise towers, glass façades and expansive balconies designed to combine urban sophistication with resort style comfort. The redevelopment, which is being undertaken by Meera Investments Limited, forms part of a broader strategy to expand high end tourism and residential infrastructure in Uganda’s capital.
According to project details, the upgraded complex will include about 360 luxury serviced apartments alongside an 18 storey five star hotel tower that will significantly expand the accommodation capacity of the facility.
Plans also include a shopping mall, multiple restaurants, a bowling alley, a modern conference centre and upgraded sports facilities aimed at turning the site into a fully integrated lifestyle destination.
Construction works are being carried out by Vcon Construction Uganda Limited, with developers indicating that key structures are expected to be completed within the year as work on the project continues.
Ruparelia said the redevelopment reflects growing demand for modern hospitality and residential spaces in Kampala, particularly among international visitors, expatriates and investors seeking integrated living environments within the city.
“The idea is to create a destination where people can live, stay, work and relax in one place,” he said when unveiling the project concept. “Kampala is growing quickly and we need facilities that match international standards while still offering comfort and leisure for residents and visitors.”
For decades, Kabira Country Club has been recognised as one of the capital’s boutique hospitality facilities, offering accommodation, swimming pools, tennis courts and event venues that attract both residents and international travellers. The property is currently rated as a four star establishment by the Uganda Tourism Board.
The new redevelopment plan will retain these core amenities while expanding the complex into a larger residential and commercial hub capable of serving both long stay residents and short term guests.
Urban planners and real estate observers say projects of this scale reflect the continued transformation of Kampala’s property sector as developers respond to increasing demand for high quality accommodation, conference facilities and lifestyle spaces in rapidly growing neighbourhoods.
The redevelopment also reinforces the position of the Ruparelia Group as one of the most influential players in Uganda’s hospitality and property sectors. Over the years the group has delivered several landmark developments including Kingdom Kampala and Speke Resort Munyonyo, both of which have become major business and tourism hubs in the capital.
Once completed, the revamped Kabira complex is expected to reshape the character of the Bukoto area by introducing high rise residential towers and a five star hotel that will attract both international visitors and property investors. Developers say the project will also contribute to job creation and strengthen Kampala’s capacity to host large conferences and leisure travellers.
For Kampala’s evolving skyline, the redevelopment marks another step in the city’s shift toward modern mixed use developments that combine hospitality, residence and commerce within a single destination.
