By Richard Onapatum
ASTU HEADQUARTERS – May 13, 2025, Security forces in Karamoja have intensified their efforts against illicit alcohol trade, with the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) impounding a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal waragi.
The operation took place at Atari Checkpoint, where officers intercepted a white-colored motor vehicle, registration number UBL 798Z, allegedly carrying 192 jerrycans of illicit liquor.
According to security reports, the driver, Otoo Alfred, abandoned the vehicle and fled, leaving authorities to secure the truck for further investigation.
Crackdown on Illicit Alcohol Trade
This latest interception is part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb the flow of unregulated waragi into Karamoja, which has been linked to health hazards, rising addiction rates, and security concerns in the region.
Police officials say smuggling networks continue to exploit hidden village routes and bribery loopholes, making the illicit alcohol trade a persistent challenge.
IP Longole Mike, PRO Mt Moroto/ASTU, confirmed that the impounded vehicle remains under investigation as authorities work to trace the source and intended distribution of the seized alcohol.

Security Forces Step Up Operations
Security forces in Moroto and surrounding districts have been directed to intensify surveillance at key transit points, aiming to disrupt illicit trade routes and prevent smuggling activities.
Authorities urge community members to report suspicious movements of vehicles and individuals suspected of transporting illegal substances into Karamoja.
Growing Concerns Over Illicit Waragi’s Impact
Officials warn that the unregulated production and distribution of waragi has contributed to alcohol-related fatalities, domestic violence, and social instability, fueling urgent calls for stronger enforcement and public sensitization efforts.
