We Want Them Out Of Office: Opposition Criticizes Uganda Human Rights Commission, EC Chair Reappointment

Kampala, January 15, 2024 – In a recent address, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, the Member of Parliament for Nakawa west, new leader of opposition and a prominent figure in the Ugandan opposition, expressed dissatisfaction with the workings of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) led by Ms. Mariam Fauzat Wangadya. Additionally, Ssenyonyi voiced concerns over the reappointment of Justice Simon Byabakama as the Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC).

During his speech, Ssenyonyi outlined the opposition’s stance on the issues, stating, “As the opposition, we are going to produce our own values. What we think is important to us, which we think works for the character that is good.” He emphasized the need for a budget that prioritizes critical matters and criticized the alleged misuse of funds on military assets.

Ssenyonyi expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of Ms. Mariam Fauzat Wangadya, stating, “We have not dropped the ball about pushing Mariam Wanda out of office.” He cited concerns about human rights violations and indicated that the opposition might seek a replacement for her.

Addressing the reappointment of Justice Simon Byabakama, Ssenyonyi questioned the independence of the Electoral Commission, arguing that appointing individuals associated with the ruling party compromised the impartiality of the electoral process. He called for transparency in the selection process and rejected the appointment of “partisan referees,” emphasizing that the election process belongs to the people.

Ssenyonyi concluded by urging the people of Uganda to raise their voices against what he deemed unacceptable appointments. He emphasized that the election process is ongoing, asserting, “It is not an event; it is a process that belongs to us, and it must be fair.” The opposition leader’s remarks reflect growing discontent with the perceived politicization of key institutions in Uganda.
