lKabale, Uganda — The Inspector General of Government (IGG) has ordered the arrest of a health worker at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital following allegations linked to the mismanagement and suspected theft of medical gloves.

The directive came after the IGG conducted an impromptu visit to the facility on Tuesday afternoon. During the inspection, she reportedly found several hospital administrators absent from duty, while a number of patients were left unattended in different wards a situation that raised serious concerns about service delivery and accountability at the hospital.

Preliminary findings indicate that essential medical supplies, including gloves meant for patient care, were either missing or improperly handled.

The IGG described the situation as unacceptable, warning that negligence and corruption within public health facilities undermine patient safety and public trust.Sources at the hospital say the arrested health worker is expected to assist investigators as authorities seek to establish how the gloves were diverted and whether more staff could be implicated in the scandal.

The IGG has also directed the hospital management to immediately account for all medical supplies and ensure that administrators remain on duty during working hours.

She further called on the Ministry of Health to strengthen supervision and enforce strict disciplinary measures against staff found guilty of misconduct.

Meanwhile, patients and community leaders in Kabale have welcomed the intervention, expressing hope that the probe will lead to improved service delivery and better accountability within the hospital.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and more arrests have not been ruled out.
