10 years later, Dokolo Technical School still await on Museveni’s bus promise

Dokolo, Uganda: Administrators at government-aided Dokolo Technical School have renewed calls for President Museveni to fulfill a 10-year-old pledge to provide the institution with a school bus.
The pledge was made during a 2015 presidential campaign rally in Dokolo District, but to date, the school has not received the promised bus, according to school principal Richard Bogere.

“Actually, we have waited for 10 years, but we still hope to get a bus. The school has faced significant transport challenges, and while parents have stepped in to provide a temporary solution, we still believe the government will honor its commitment,” Bogere said.

To ease transport constraints, the school’s parents mobilized funds and raised UGX 245 million to procure a mini-bus, which now serves as a temporary solution while they await the government’s intervention.

Julius Peter Odwe, the Chairperson of the Board of Governors, commended parents for their sacrifice but emphasized that the government must act on the promise.

“The parents have done their part by contributing funds to purchase a mini-bus, but the government must fulfill its promise. If the district leadership actively follows up, I am confident that the school will finally receive what was pledged,” Odwe noted.

Dokolo District Speaker Joel Opota Okuma said the matter continues to be raised whenever central government officials visit the district.

“As a district, we always remind officials from the Ministry of Education and the President’s Office about the delayed bus pledge. It is a matter of priority for us, and we will continue to push for its fulfillment,” he said.

Jafa Ocaya, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Dokolo, vowed to follow up on the matter at higher levels of government.

“The pledge was made to improve the school’s transport system, and it is only fair that the commitment is honored. I will ensure the President is made aware of the continued delay,” Ocaya stated.

The delay in fulfilling the pledge underscores growing concerns about unfulfilled presidential promises, especially those made during campaign seasons, which often go unmonitored after elections.
