Kasese Police Officer Dies After Tree Falls on Station During Heavy Rainstorm

By Obed Kithende
Kasese, Uganda — A police officer attached to Mpondwe Police Station in Kasese District has tragically died after being struck by a falling tree during a heavy rainstorm on the afternoon of Saturday, June 8, 2025.
The deceased has been identified as Rodgers Kapili, a dedicated officer known for his service in the Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council. He was also the elder brother to Jockim Masereka, a popular local radio personality widely known as DJ Masjoe of Country Radio 87.6 FM.
According to eyewitnesses and preliminary police reports, Kapili was inside the station’s depot at the time of the incident when a large tree—believed to have been weakened by persistent rainfall and strong winds—suddenly gave way and crashed onto the building. The impact caused extensive structural damage and fatally injured the officer.
The rainstorm, part of a broader weather system affecting much of western Uganda, swept through several parts of Kasese District, bringing down trees, damaging property, and disrupting transportation and business activities. Residents in areas like Bwera, Mpondwe, and parts of Rwenzori Sub-region reported heavy winds and flash floods that caused temporary power outages and blocked access roads.
Local authorities and first responders rushed to the scene in an attempt to rescue the officer, but he succumbed to his injuries before further help could arrive.
“This is a very unfortunate and tragic incident. Officer Kapili was on duty, serving his community, when this act of nature claimed his life,” said a senior officer at Mpondwe Police Station, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”
As of Sunday morning, the Uganda Police Force had not yet issued an official public statement, but investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal incident, including the condition of the trees surrounding the station and whether preventive measures had been considered during the ongoing rainy season.
The death of Officer Kapili has sparked concern among community members and local leaders about infrastructure safety, especially for officers and civil servants working in areas vulnerable to natural disasters. There are renewed calls for routine structural inspections of government facilities and enhanced disaster preparedness.
Funeral arrangements for the late Rodgers Kapili are underway, with family members and colleagues expected to gather in Kasese to pay their final respects.
