President Samia Suluhu Hassan has March 28 suspended the Director General of Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) Mr Deusdedit Kakoko after the institution was adversely mentioned in the report of the Controller and Auditor General (CAG).
It was after the President received the 2019/20 GAC audit reports from State House in Dodoma.
Sunday, President Hassan said she had seen the massive embezzlement that has been conducted at TPA and ordered the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) to take up the task as a matter of urgency.
At one time, President Hassan said, the Prime Minister, Mr. Kassim Majaliwa had formed a committee to examine what was going on at the port and certain measures were taken.
“I now order the suspension of the Executive Director of APT to open the door to investigations into the misappropriation of funds,” she said. Last December, Mr. Those on hold were the director of finance, Ms. Nuru Mhando, and the manager of financial expenditures, Ms. Mahela.
Majaliwa said it was unusual for the TPA to have approved the payment of 8.2 billion shillings at the port of Kigoma for various payments when the port boundary was 7.4 billion shillings.
The suspended officials were Finance director, Ms Nuru Mhando, and the Financial Expenditures manager, Ms Witness Mahela.
Mr. Kakoko was re-appointed as Director General of the TPA in October 2018 after a lengthy acting appointment.
The meeting – held at the TPA offices – was also attended by the director of criminal investigations (DCI), Robert Boaz, and the director general of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB), Brigadier General John Mbungo.
Mr Majaliwa said it was unusual that TPA approved the payment of Sh8.2 billion to Kigoma Port for various payments while the limit of the port was Sh7.4 billion.
President Suluhu said on Sunday, March 28, 2021 that sternaction will be taken against heads of other public entities, including Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) that had been adversely mentioned in the CAG’s report.
Mr Kakoko was confirmed as TPA Director General in October 2018 after working in the position in the acting capacity for a long time.
He replaced Awadhi Massawe who was fired along with the then permanent secretary in the transport ministry, Shaaban Mwinjaka by former President John Magufuli following the disappearance of over 2,700 shipping containers at the port.
