In a recent ceremony at Parliament , Speaker Anita Among unveiled brand new SUV  vehicles to former Speakers of Parliament. The ceremony, which took place this morning, saw the handing over of vehicles to esteemed individuals such as Al Haji Moses Kigongo, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, Rebecca Kadaga, and Prof. Edward Rugumayo.

During the event, Speaker Among emphasized that Parliament has taken the initiative to provide new cars to the former Speakers every five years. This decision not only demonstrates recognition and appreciation for their service but also drives the conversation regarding the responsibilities and privileges of those who hold high positions in our nation.

It is important to note that the costs associated with fuel, maintenance, and the salaries of the drivers of these vehicles will be covered by Ugandan taxpayers. Speaker Anita Among acknowledged this fact while highlighting the critical role that taxpayers play in supporting the endeavors of Parliament and its esteemed members.

Furthermore, Speaker Among highlighted the recent enactment of the Parliamentary Pensions Act, which now extends its benefits to include all Speakers who have served Uganda since 1979. This development ensures that individuals such as President Museveni, Chairman of NRC 1896-1996, Edward Rugumayo, Speaker and Chairman NCC from 1979-1980, Francis Butagira from 1980-1985, Al Haji Moses Kigongo, Vice Chairman NRC 1986-1996, and Edward Ssekandi, Deputy Speaker and Speaker of the 7th and 8th Parliament, are entitled to receive new cars every five years.

Under this arrangement, former Speakers will be required to bring their own drivers, who will then be recruited as Parliamentary staff. The salaries of these drivers will be covered by Parliament. It is important to clarify that the vehicles provided to the former Speakers remain the property of the Government of Uganda, with Parliament responsible for their maintenance and fuel.

Speaker Anita Among reiterated that this provision is in line with the responsibility of the government to take care of its former high-ranking officials. This gesture demonstrates the commitment of Parliament to ensure the welfare and support of those who have dedicated their service to the nation.
