Kampala, Uganda — April 9, 2026Police in Katwe Division have dismantled a notorious gang of panga-wielding robbers that has been terrorising several suburbs in Kampala, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation.

According to police, the crackdown follows weeks of surveillance on a group believed to be behind a string of violent robberies in areas including Makindye, Kizungu in Salaama, Bunga, and Katwe.

The breakthrough came on April 5, 2026, when officers arrested a suspect identified as Olwo, also known as Tom, along Mubaraka Road in Makindye Division.

He was found riding a motorcycle, registration number UMA 979 HA, a maroon Haojue.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to being part of an organised criminal gang that carried out robberies using pangas and motorcycles.

Acting on the intelligence gathered, police mounted a targeted early morning operation on April 8 at around 5:00am in Kapeeke Zone, Kibuye I Parish, Makindye Division.

The operation led to the arrest of nine additional suspects, among them Bogere Latif, also known as Musoga, and Turyahirwa Ivan, also known as Musiramu.

Authorities also impounded four motorcycles believed to have been used in executing the robberies.

Preliminary findings indicate that some of the motorcycles may have been stolen and were used to facilitate quick getaways after attacks.

Police say the suspects have confessed to multiple incidents, including the theft of Shs350,000 from a motor vehicle in Kizungu Zone, Salaama Parish, as well as several mobile phone snatching cases along Salaama Road.

One mobile phone suspected to have been stolen was recovered during the operation.

Investigations further suggest that the group had been operating for a considerable period, primarily targeting cash and electronic devices, and relying on speed and coordination to evade capture.

All suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

Police have reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying operations against criminal gangs to enhance public safety across Kampala.
