It’s Over: Hajat Kulthum, Acram Gumisiriza split after three years of tumultuous marriage

Kampala, Uganda: Dr. Hajat Kulthum Nabunya, widow of the late muslim cleric, Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata Batte, has officially announced the end of her marriage to businessman Acram Gumisiriza, confirming the couple has separated after three years together.

In a heartfelt statement shared via her socials on Monday, Dr. Kulthum revealed that despite sustained efforts to salvage the relationship, the two had mutually agreed to go their separate ways after what she described as a prolonged period of emotional distance.

“After much thought, self-reflection, and many attempts to rebuild our connection, I have made the painful decision to end our marriage,” she wrote. “This decision wasn’t made in haste or anger but comes after a long period of emotional distance between us, despite our best efforts.”

Kulthum said the love and connection that once united them had faded into routine and detachment. “I no longer feel truly seen or heard in this relationship, and I suspect, if we’re honest, my husband has felt similarly,” she added.

The pair wed in 2022, barely a year after the death of her former husband, Sheikh Muzaata, a revered cleric and outspoken Muslim leader. Their union drew mixed reactions from the Muslim community, with critics questioning the timing and spiritual propriety of the marriage.

The relationship also endured a number of public challenges, most notably in 2023 when Acram was accused of attempted sexual assault by a young woman who claimed he lured her under the pretense of offering a ride, allegations he vehemently denied as being fueled by haters to ruin his name.

Speculation about cracks in their marriage has circulated since late 2023, but Kulthum dismissed the reports at the time, attributing her silence to business-related travel in Dubai.

In her statement, the soft-spoken entrepreneur and public figure emphasized that she hoped the separation would proceed with respect and maturity. “If there are any legal or shared matters that need resolution, I am committed to addressing them maturely and respectfully.”

She further underscored the spiritual weight of her decision, noting that she had turned to prayer and reflection before concluding the relationship was beyond repair. “Marriage is both a personal and sacred commitment, and I do not take its dissolution lightly,” she said.

Acram Gumisiriza, who is currently residing in the United States, had not issued any public comment on the separation by press time.
