Chapter Four Boss Nicholas Opiyo Wins Human Rights Tulip 2021
Nicholas Opiyo, a human rights lawyer, has been awarded the Human Rights Tulip for 2021. The award is given by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and comes with a monetary prize of 100,000 euros (about Shs400 million) to help the recipient continue or grow their work.
Nicholas Opiyo is the Executive Director of Chapter Four Uganda, a non-governmental organization dedicated to the protection of civil liberties and the advancement of human rights for all Ugandans. In Uganda, he was instrumental in making torture illegal.
He also defends persons who are in difficulty with the government but do not have the financial means to defend themselves.
Last year, the Human Rights Tulip was awarded to Lilit Martirosyan, an Armenian activist who advocates for transgender individuals and sex workers.
