Kampala International University (KIU) has been ranked the third best university in East Africa and the top private university in the region by Webometrics, the world’s largest academic ranking of higher education institutions. This marks a significant improvement from its fifth-place position in 2023.
KIU follows the University of Nairobi and Makerere University, which secured the first and second spots respectively. The University of Dar-es-Salaam and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology took the fourth and fifth positions.
On a continental scale, KIU climbed from the 61st position in 2023 to 47th in Africa, with Makerere University being the only other Ugandan institution in the top 50.
In Uganda, KIU maintained its status as the second best university, following Makerere University. Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Kyambogo University, and Gulu University were ranked third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, conducted by the Cybermetrics Lab under Spain’s largest public research body, CSIC, uses webometric and bibliometric indicators to evaluate universities. The ranking aims to promote open access to university-generated knowledge and provides a comprehensive assessment of university performance.
Janice Busingye, KIU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Finance and Administration, expressed pride in the university’s growth and adaptability over the past two decades. She highlighted KIU’s commitment to leveraging state-of-the-art facilities, sourcing dedicated students, integrating cutting-edge technologies, and fostering continuous staff development.
“We remain very creative in programme development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, encompassing a whole range of training opportunities. I am proud of a very strong and focused team ready to attend to your needs, be it information on study, work, research, innovation, collaborations, just name it,” Busingye said.
