Residents of Kitanda Cubcounty in Bukomansimbi District are gripped with fear as an unidentified disease sweeps through their communities, claiming the lives of their children. The mysterious illness, which has been confirmed in six villages including Bakijjulula, Kabandiiko, Kabangereza, Missenyi, and Kyankoko, is particularly targeting children aged between 10 and 15 years old.

At least four children have succumbed to the illness, leaving families devastated and communities on edge. Among the grieving parents is Margaret Namuwonge from Kyankoko Village in Gayaza Parish, who recently lost her 14-year-old daughter, Linnet Nakayiiki, to the disease. Namuwonge recounts how her daughter initially displayed mild symptoms, which rapidly escalated into a life-threatening condition characterized by blood in the urine.

Similar tragic stories have emerged from other affected families, including George Byakatonda and his wife Teddy Nampijja from Kabandiiko village, who lost their 13-year-old daughter, Justine Nansamba, after she exhibited similar symptoms. Despite swift medical intervention, including blood transfusions, the children’s conditions deteriorated rapidly, leading to their untimely deaths.

Concerned residents report that the disease progresses rapidly, with affected children showing symptoms of headache and fever before experiencing blood in their urine, typically leading to death within three days. Despite seeking medical attention, confusion persists among health workers regarding the exact nature of the illness, with some attributing it to malaria while others remain uncertain.

Local authorities, including Kitanda subcounty chairperson Kamuli Joseph, have raised alarm over the situation and have appealed to the Ministry of Health to intervene urgently. However, responses from district authorities have been slow, leaving communities feeling neglected and vulnerable.

In response to inquiries, Dr. Kato Alfred, the Bukomansimbi health officer, has dispatched a team of medical workers to investigate the outbreak and identify the underlying cause of the mysterious illness. Meanwhile, residents remain on high alert, grappling with grief and anxiety as they await answers and solutions to this deadly threat looming over their communities.
