Police Ready To Enforce NEMA Express Penalty Policy, Shs6m Fine For Not Putting A Dustbin In The Car
According to the police, they have launched an awareness campaign with NEMA in an effort to raise knowledge of the new expedited punishment system designed to discourage environmental law violations and stop environmental damage.
Police spokesman Fred Enanga told reporters on Monday that they will inform the public of the punishment structure for breaking environmental regulations over the course of the next four weeks.
“Environmental police and our police in all jurisdictions have teamed up with NEMA and other stakeholders to continue with extensive awareness drives as a countdown to the enforcement of laws and regulations on littering and noise pollution,” Enanga said in reference to April 1, when the enforcement starts.
A driver who is caught driving without a trashcan in the vehicle will specifically be fined Sh6 million, while a driver who dumps trash out the window will also get the same punishment.
The awareness campaign will run until March 31 before enforcement begins on April 1, according to the police.
“The enforcement won’t begin for another 27 days. As a result of partygoers, pedestrians, and drivers dumping trash, streets, highways, gardens, complexes, and drainage systems around the nation are littered and overrun with noise pollution. CCTV cameras will be used to monitor and apprehend litterbugs, according to Enanga.
Prior to the enforcement next month, he said that Police and NEMA would collaborate with the KCCA, UPDF, NGOs, religious leaders, and local governments to carry out a comprehensive education campaign on how to combat trash and noise pollution.
“We want to encourage the general public and foreign tourists to abide by these rules; otherwise, we will arrest violators and penalize them.”
