Kalungu, Uganda — The local community in Kalungu District is in shock following the death of a nine-year-old Primary Four pupil at an unregistered boarding school in Lukaya Town Council.

The pupil, identified as Vanessa Nakayemba, reportedly fell ill while in her dormitory.

Despite immediate attention from school staff, she later passed away, leaving classmates and teachers devastated.

Police say early findings indicate serious safety and hygiene lapses at the school, including overcrowded dormitories.

A school matron has been detained to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Authorities are urging parents to verify the registration and safety standards of schools before enrollment.

“The family is devastated and demands answers,” a local resident said, highlighting concerns over the welfare of children in unlicensed institutions.

Counseling services are being arranged for pupils affected by the tragedy.

This incident has reignited national debate over the regulation of private boarding schools and the urgent need to protect learners from unsafe environments.
