Drummer As IGG Team Find Nurse On Duty Sleeping, While The Health Unit Is Closed
There was drummer as the Inspectorate of Government (IG) officials led by the Deputy Inspector General of Government, Ms Anne Muheirwe Twinomugisha, found Kamukira Health Centre IV in Kabale Municipality closed.
When the officials arrived at the facility at around 3.30 p.m., they discovered a nurse on duty was asleep and not dressed in uniform.
As part of the ongoing anti-corruption week, officials paid an unscheduled visit to the health institution to, among other things, examine its services and operations.
Ms Twinomugisha informed the press that the facility’s officer in charge, Dr Daniel Tumwesigye, said he was in Kabale Town but couldn’t explain why.
She claimed that absence costs the government Shs2 billion per year.
Ms Twinomugisha stated that she would engage with the Ministry of Health to examine the Kamukira health staff.
In Kabale Municipality, Kamukira is the sole health center IV.
A patient, Ms Macklin Kemigisha, stated the facility is only open until midday.
Mr Tumwesigye, who arrived at the facility after the IG officials had left, claimed that the team had entered without the permission of the district health officer or the town clerk.
Mr Sam Agaba, the chairman of the Kigezi region’s Inspectorate of Government, said absenteeism has been a problem, and that some health professionals and teachers have been probed and referred to several district service commissions for punishment.
“I’ve ordered all of my region’s accounting officials to step up and ensure that health workers report for duty, and I urge all health workers to report for duty because they apply for the jobs and are paid on a regular basis.” “Anyone who is discovered not on duty would be prosecuted,” Mr Agaba added.
