Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has stated that government personnel are not afraid to run against President Museveni, but they are afraid of how the president will react to their candidacy.

Kyagulanyi’s comments came after Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, denied speculations circulating on social media that she would run for president in 2026.

Kadaga came out yesterday to disassociate herself from speculations that she is considering running for president.

“In May 2021, the same posters and allegations were uploaded on social media, prompting the Uganda Communications Commission and security services to investigate.” This is to make it clear that the posters are bogus and meant to sow discord in the country,” Kadaga said in a statement.

Some of these high-ranking government officials, according to Kyagulanyi, would like to oppose Museveni but are afraid of being singled out for a witch hunt.

“They just fear inexplicable deaths, imprisonment, extortion, torture, witch-hunts, and every kind of punishment perpetrated on individuals who have attempted to run for the highest office in the land,” wrote Kyagulanyi.

While running for a position on the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) in 2020, the former speaker claimed that she was the one who set President Museveni’s age limit.

Kadaga’s claims were later disregarded by Museveni.

Kadaga is the second high-ranking member in Museveni’s administration to separate himself from the presidency.

Former Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda rebuffed rumours tying him to the presidency in 2026 in August of this year.

“I’ve seen proposals on social media that I might run for President in 2026. I’d like to state unequivocally that I have no such plans,” he said in a post on Twitter.
