Model Faked Marriage To Zimbabwe Vice President – Court
Marry Mubaiwa, 40, used to be among the cream of Zimbabwean society, having been married to an international footballer before leaving to marry the then-army chief Constantino Chiwenga.
She is accused of attempting to kill Constantino Chiwenga by removing his intravenous lines while he was hospitalized in South Africa in 2019.
A court ruled on Thursday that the former model accused of attempting to assassinate Zimbabwe’s vice president forged the marriage documents that would have formalized their eight-year relationship.
Marry Mubaiwa, 40, used to be among the cream of Zimbabwean society, having been married to an international footballer before leaving to marry the then-army chief Constantino Chiwenga.
Chiwenga orchestrated the 2017 coup against Robert Mugabe, earning him the vice presidency as his ally Emmerson Mnangagwa took power.
Her ambitions were dashed when she was charged with money laundering, fraud, and murder. Meanwhile, a lymphatic disease has ravaged her body to the point where doctors are planning to amputate her forearm.
Mubaiwa and Chiwenga were married according to customary law, which included a traditional cattle offering to her family.
The relationship deteriorated. Chiwenga was hospitalized in South Africa in 2019 and is accused of attempting to murder him by removing his intravenous lines.
Around the same time, she forged his signature on documents that would have formalised their marriage as a civil marriage, which gives women more rights in the event of divorce.
Mubaiwa avoided prison due to her illness and was fined 60,000 Zimbabwe dollars ($380, 350 euros).
Mubaiwa accuses Chiwenga of obstructing all of her efforts to seek treatment abroad, despite the fact that Zimbabwe’s hospital system is understaffed and lacks specialists to treat her condition.
Her murder case, as well as a $1 million money laundering case, remain unresolved.
