Dozens of Palestinian militants infiltrate Israel from Gaza by land, sea and air ■ Some 2,500 rockets fired from the Strip ■ At least 250 Israelis killed, over 1,800 wounded ■ Army strikes Hamas targets in Gaza; 256 Palestinians reportedly killed ■ ‘Substantial’ number of civilians and soldiers held hostage in Gaza

IDF spokesman: Army aims to evacuate all residents of towns near Gaza border; 400 Palestinian militants killed, dozens arrested

Israel will evacuate all residents living in towns near the Gaza border within 24 hours, IDF Spokesman Daniel Hagari said on Sunday.

Hagari added that the fighting in the southern kibbutz Kfar Aza remains ongoing, saying the soldiers are fighting heroically to free the hostages held by Hamas inside the Israeli community there. The Israeli army has also killed over 400 Palestinian militants and arrested dozens of prisoners, Hagari said.

When asked whether the Israeli army is carrying out roof-knocking procedures in Gaza, Hagari refrained from answering directly. With roof-knocking procedures, which were commonly employed during previous Israeli military operations against Gaza, residents of targeted buildings are warned in advance – usually by telephone – to leave the area, and the army then uses small missile strikes to notify civilians of larger impending missile strikes.

RECAP: Thousands of casualties in Israel and Gaza, clashes in Israel’s south ongoing, Palestinian militants arrested in West Bank

The second day of Israel’s war with Gaza began with news of with mortar shelling from Lebanon, a thwarted sea infiltration at a southern Israeli beach, arrests in the West Bank and continued fighting to reclaim parts of Israel’s south following Saturday’s rocket attacks and an infiltration of Hamas militants from Gaza.

According to data from the Israeli Health Ministry, 1,864 wounded Israelis have been taken to hospitals since the war with Gaza began. 19 patients are said to be critically wounded, with 326 in serious condition, 359 in moderate condition and 821 lightly wounded.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, the Israeli army struck Lebanon with artillery on Sunday in response to mortar shells launched by Hezbollah at the Mount Dov area. No Israeli casualties were reported.

Clashes are ongoing in the south between Palestinian militants and Israeli forces, and residents are urged to remain inside. Israeli forces fought ten armed terrorists at a police station in the southern Israeli city of Sderot on Sunday, and the area is now believed to be under Israeli control. The Israeli army said it had resumed control over most areas of fighting in the south overnight, but added that clashes with militants are still ongoing at kibbutz Be’eri, as well as in Sderot and at four other southern locations.

The Israeli Home Front Command also issued an alert on Sunday morning calling on residents of Israeli communities near the Gaza border to seek shelter and remain in their bunkers for at least ten minutes, warning of a hostile aircraft intrusion.

The Israeli army, Shin Bet security service and Border Police forces arrested 19 wanted Hamas operatives throughout Saturday night in the West Bank – including six Palestinians in the West Bank city of Hebron, according to the IDF spokesman. The Israeli army also reported on Sunday that naval forces had thwarted an infiltration attempt by five terrorists at Zikim Beach in Israel’s south.

Residents of the Gaza Strip reported Israeli strikes throughout the coastal enclave overnight and on Sunday morning, in which the homes of senior Hamas officials – including the house of the head of the militant group’s intelligence department – and civilian infrastructure were damaged.

Three towers were said to have been bombed over the last day, and a massive attack on infrastructure along the coast was reported.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said that 256 people in the Gaza Strip have been killed since the beginning of the war with Israel, including 20 children. Over 1,800 were reportedly wounded.

According to the ministry, seven people were killed in the West Bank since yesterday – two in Ramallah, two in Hebron, one in Jericho, one in Qalqilya and one in Nablus.

Residents of southern Israeli kibbutz call for Israeli army rescue

Residents of the Kfar Aza kibbutz in southern Israel are still barricading themselves in their homes and waiting for aid, more than 24 hours after the attack in Israel’s south began.

“Kfar Aza is still under war,” a member of the kibbutz community reported. “Terrorists are still walking around the kibbutz! They are shooting on the sidewalks, hiding on roofs, some of them [are] inside the houses with hostages! There are IDF forces fighting the terrorists and evacuating people from the houses, but in practice more than half of the kibbutz [remains] … cut off from communication, without electricity, without reception, without water and food, some of them have been wounded for over 24 hours! Entire families, children, elderly people who are alone in their homes. Please help us and send more troops to the kibbutz!”
