Kato Lubwama to be honoured at the National Theatre

On Monday, June 12th, the body of the deceased dramatist Paul Kato Lubwa will lie at the National Theatre in Kampala so that his fellow creatives and art admirers may pay their respects. Early on Wednesday morning, Kato Lubwama, often known as Uncle Kato, passed away.

After learning that the court had sentenced one of his buddies, former Kawempe South MP Mubaraka Munyagwa, to prison on remand, he reportedly had a heart attack. The deceased had previously had treatment in Turkey and India for a heart-related disease.

The family claims that when he passed away, he appeared fine and had no complaints, therefore his death came as a surprise. In fact, on Tuesday, just hours before he passed away, Kato Lubwama had given an interview to a Spark TV team in which he discussed a show he was planning for later this year. In true comedic Kato Lubwama fashion, he threw punches in the air to show that he could knock someone out while appearing to be in good health.

Several musicians, including Mariam Ndagire, Abbey Mukiibe, Andrew Benon Kibuuka, Mesach Ssemakuma, and Musa, Male, among others, gathered at his residence in Mutundwe, Lubaga Division of Kampala as soon as the news of his death emerged.

The remains of Kato will be brought to his house in Mutundwe on Friday, according to musician Mesach Ssemakula, a member of the funeral planning committee, where people have already gathered to pray and pay their respects. On Monday, the deceased will be honoured for his contributions to the arts and creative industries when his remains is brought to the National Theatre.

According to Ssemakula, the body would be transported to Lubaga Cathedral on Tuesday before being transported to Nkozi Village in the Mpigi District on Wednesday for the deceased’s burial. Ssemakula paid tribute to the deceased, calling him a multi-talented artist who has trained other actors and artists, as well as an open-minded guy who dared to express his ideas.

Kato Lubwama, popularly known as “Biiso” because to his large eyes, was a multi-talented artist who performed in plays and music as well as acted in songs and sang and wrote songs. He rose to fame as a result of his talent, participating in numerous plays on television and hosting shows on CBS, one of the most prestigious radio stations in the nation since its founding in 1996.

Another creative artist, Andrew Benon Kibuuka, who collaborated with Kato Lubwama in the arts and creative industries, claims that the late Kato Lubwama was a multitalented individual with a passion for the arts who was constantly producing material, developing talent, and assuring the expansion of the sector.

In the 2016 election, Democratic Party-DP member Kato Lubwama defeated incumbent Ken Lukyamuzi to win the Lubaga North parliamentary seat. Kibuuka, however, claims that even while serving in the legislature, he was never too busy to act, always making time to don the enraged costume he was required to wear on stage.

Another well-known artist, Sam Bagenda, better known by his stage as Dr. Bbosa, similarly laments the loss the arts and creative industries have endured with the demise of Kato Lubwama, a talented actor with a deep love for the arts. He characterized the deceased’s distinctiveness as being that he was a multifaceted individual who frequently utilized satire to convey very important issues.

Kato Lubwama, who was born on August 16th, 1970, retires after more than three decades in the art and creative industries. He will be recognized for a variety of artistic endeavors, notably his portrayal in the play “The Divided Family – Amaka Mubuwanganguse,” for which he won the National Cultural Centre’s Best Actor of the Year award.

On Heroes Day in 2017, Kato Lubwama received a medal from Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni together with Sam Bagenda, Fred Ssebatta, Abbey Mukiibi, and posthumously Elly Wamala and Paulo Kafeero in recognition of his contributions to the creative industry.
