Stop selective prosecution in Iron Sheets scandal – NUP

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has urged the government to stop enforcing laws in a selective manner and make sure that everyone involved in the iron sheets scam is held accountable.

Mary Gorreti Kitutu, the minister for Karamoja affairs, and her brother Michael Naboya were remanded to jail on Thursday for their respective roles in the diversion of 14,500 pre-painted iron sheets meant for the Karamoja Community Empowerment Program. The court was presided over by Chief Magistrate Joan Achiro.

Despite other prominent government officials being suspected of diverting the iron sheets, Kitutu was the first person to be charged.

On Thursday, David Lewis Rubongoya, the general secretary of the NUP party, made a statement at the party’s headquarters in Kamwokya. He claimed they denounced the state for not bringing charges against other government officials involved in corruption issues.

Kittutu is currently being sacrificed, he continued, while the other suspects are being allowed to escape punishment.

Stop pursuing only some people in the Iron Sheets scam, says NUP

The NUP Spokesman, Joel Ssenyonyi, stated that since numerous other government officials have admitted to stealing the iron sheets intended for Karamoja, everyone involved should face charges.

However, more individuals will be charged in connection with the theft of iron sheets, according to information provided by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Other suspects will be brought before the court for their various roles in the diversion of the iron sheets, according to Jacquelyn Okui, a spokeswoman for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions-OPP.

“This is not a targeted investigation. What has transpired is that Peace Meal is handling the case. So, this case file is only the beginning. For each suspect, there is a case file. When the police have finished their inquiries, they will send the case file to the DPP’s office for review, Okui added.

The mother of Kitutu was meant to be included in the same file as the Minister, but due of her senior age, the DPP opted not to charge her in the interest of justice, according to Okui. She is 86 years old or so.
