Kaliro, Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni is expected to grace a historic religious event at Bugonza Catholic Parish in Kaliro District next month on July 6, 2025, for a Special Mass honouring three significant figures in the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, Pope Leo XIV, and Uganda Martyr St. Gonzaga Gonza.
The Mass, described by Jinja Catholic Diocese as a “triple celebration,” will recognize Pope Francis’ service, welcome the newly elected Pope Leo XIV, and commemorate the Solemnity of St. Gonzaga Gonza, one of the Uganda Martyrs and a son of the soil from Busoga sub-region.
The announcement was made by Haji Faruk Kirunda, Deputy Presidential Press Secretary, during an appearance on Cross Fire, a political talk show hosted by Ibrahim Shamiru Byakika on Busoga One FM.
“The President acknowledges the Church’s critical role in promoting morality and development. His presence will reaffirm government support to faith-based initiatives,” Kirunda said.
He further noted that President Museveni intends to empower religious leaders as “key pillars in community transformation.”
St. Gonzaga Gonza, a member of the Zibondo royal family in Bulamogi, is one of the 22 Uganda Martyrs who were canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1964. Bugonza, his birthplace, has since become a revered pilgrimage site that attracts thousands of believers each year.
Although the official Solemnity of St. Gonzaga Gonza is commemorated on July 7, this year’s celebration will be held a day earlier to accommodate the President’s schedule and encourage national participation.
Church leaders and government officials are working together to ensure smooth preparations ahead of the anticipated presidential visit and influx of pilgrims.
