Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni is set to meet with US Ambassador William Popp this Thursday at State House, Entebbe, to address the diplomatic tension sparked by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s ultimatum. The Chief of Defence Forces and First Son had demanded a personal apology from Ambassador Popp for allegedly disrespecting President Museveni and Ugandans through “undiplomatic conduct”

Although the tweets were deleted, the tension lingers. General Muhoozi had given Ambassador Popp three days to apologize, but the US Mission in Uganda denied any formal request or apology. This development follows General Muhoozi’s previous controversy with Kenya, where he suggested Uganda’s army could capture Kenya within two weeks, prompting President Museveni to caution him on social media activity

Sources suggest the “undiplomatic conduct” relates to the US Embassy’s stance on President Museveni’s potential seventh term in 2026. General Muhoozi recently endorsed his father for another term, stating no civilian will rule Uganda after General Museveni. President Museveni, in power for 38 years, has consistently maintained that the people will decide on succession

Thursday’s meeting will also be attended by General Jeje Odongo, Minister of Foreign Affairs, among others. The diplomatic spat raises questions about Uganda’s relationship with the US and the country’s political future.
