Kyegewa District, Western Uganda – December 19, 2023
In a demonstration of solidarity and commitment to promoting Africanism, the Pan-African Pyramid, led by its Speaker, Andrew Irumba Katusabe, visited the Kyaka 2 Refugee Camp in Kyegewa District, Western Uganda, on December 19, 2023. The visit aimed to provide relief aid and support to the more than 120,000 refugees residing in the settlement.
Speaking at the event, Alex Ruhunda, Member of Parliament for Fort Portal Tourism City, and Patron of the Pan-African Pyramid, expressed gratitude to the government of Uganda for its inclusive policies that allow refugees to integrate into local communities seamlessly. Ruhunda emphasized the importance of fostering unity, stating, “This is the spirit of Ubuntuism, where we must truly share God’s creation with a lot of love and weather the storms together.”
He urged other African governments to address conflicts within their borders and prioritize good governance to prevent the displacement of their citizens. Ruhunda stressed the need for Ubuntuism, the philosophy of interconnectedness and shared humanity, as a guiding principle for African nations.
Honorable Ruhunda extended appreciation to the local leadership, including the district leadership and Honorable Bride, for their cooperation and support in facilitating the Pan-African Pyramid’s mission. He expressed hope that the refugees would have positive memories of Uganda when they eventually return to their home countries.
Following Ruhunda’s remarks, a representative from the Office of the Prime Minister and the Commandant of Kyaka 2 Refugee Camp, Benson Atwera, commended the Pan-African Pyramid for its support. Atwera highlighted the challenges faced by the camp, including shortages of food and inadequate living conditions due to reduced funding for refugee programs.
Benson Atwera, Community Services Assistant in the Prime Minister’s office, welcomed the relief items provided by the Pan-African Pyramid, emphasizing their paramount importance in addressing the immediate needs of the refugees. He requested cooperation for a smooth distribution process.
The Speaker of the Pan-African Pyramid, Mr. Andrew Irumba Katusabe, spoke passionately about the organization’s commitment to helping vulnerable communities. He urged everyone to be their brothers’ keepers, emphasizing the transient nature of life and the possibility that anyone could find themselves in a similar situation.
The Speaker expressed gratitude to the Gro Foundation, led by Paul Flynn, for their support. The Gro Foundation donated solar lighting worth $10,000 to address the shortage of lighting in certain areas of the camp, referred to as “black spots.” Paul Flynn, on behalf of the foundation, presented a $10,000 check to implement the solar project.
Additionally, Flynn and the Speaker launched a tree-planting initiative with the goal of planting 5 billion trees in Uganda. This initiative aims to contribute to environmental conservation and create sustainable ecosystems.
The refugees at Kyaka 2 were elated by the support received from the Pan-African Pyramid and expressed their gratitude. The organization has been actively visiting various refugee camps across Uganda, including Bidibidi, Nakivale, and Reamwanja, demonstrating unwavering solidarity and brotherhood with displaced communities
