71 Dead, 251 Seriously Injured On Ugandan Roads In One week
361 accidents were reported on Ugandan roads in total throughout the course of the previous week, according to the traffic police.
During a press conference on Monday, traffic police spokesperson ASP Faridah Nampiima said the collisions took place all around the nation between February 26 and March 4.
According to Nampiima, “These accidents had 322 victims, 71 of whom were died and 251 of whom were seriously injured.
Of the 361 accidents, 64 were fatal, 181 were serious, and 116 were minor, she noted.
Accidents are classified as either fatal or serious depending on how many people are killed or wounded. Minor accidents just result in car damage.
According to traffic police, Kampala Metropolitan North, which has its headquarters at Kawempe Police Station, had the highest number of fatalities on the roads in the previous week with seven, while KMP East and Wamala police district each had six.
According to a representative for the traffic police, the main contributing factors to accidents were distracted driving, drunk driving, going over the posted speed limit, lane splitting, and reckless driving.
Offenders
Nampiima said that over the same time frame, 8653 persons were detained by traffic police and given express penalty citations for a variety of traffic offenses.
She stated that 326 people were stopped for speeding, 1226 were stopped for reckless driving, 1478 were stopped for operating vehicles in dangerous technical condition, and another 379 were stopped for not wearing seat belts.
In response to a surge in accidents, the spokeswoman for the traffic police said that actions to maintain order on Ugandan roads will continue.
