Five Schools Closed in Mukono Over Poor Sanitation and Unqualified Staff.

Education authorities in Mukono District have closed five private schools in Nakisunga Sub-county following an inspection that uncovered serious shortcomings in sanitation, staffing, and classroom space.

The decision was taken after a routine compliance exercise by district education officials aimed at assessing whether privately run schools meet the minimum standards required for operation.

According to officials, inspectors found that several of the affected schools had poor sanitation facilities, including inadequate and unhygienic latrines, posing potential health risks to pupils.

The inspection team also reported overcrowded classrooms, with learner numbers far exceeding the recommended capacity.

Authorities further noted that some of the schools were operating without enough qualified teachers, raising concerns about the quality of education being provided to learners.

District education leaders said the institutions will remain closed until their proprietors address the identified issues and comply with the standards set by the Ministry of Education and Sports.

Officials emphasized that the move is intended to safeguard the health, safety, and academic welfare of learners in the district.

The closures have also renewed calls for stricter monitoring of privately operated schools, particularly in rapidly growing communities where demand for education has led to the emergence of institutions that sometimes operate without adequate facilities or trained personnel.
