KAKUMIRO — Residents of Kisiita West Cell in Kisiita Town Council, Kakumiro District are mourning the tragic death of two four-year-old boys who were found lifeless inside a refrigerator on Wednesday night.

The deceased have been identified as Charles Muramuzi, son of local businessman Charles Nasasira, and John Paul Twesigomwe, son of Frank Twesigomwe Muntu.

According to residents, the two children, who were close friends and often seen playing together, were last spotted on Wednesday evening.

Their disappearance was noticed at around 8:30 p.m., prompting an immediate search by their families and members of the community.

Neighbours combed through nearby homes, shops and surrounding areas for nearly two hours, calling out the boys’ names in growing panic.

The search ended in devastation at about 10 p.m. when the children’s bodies were discovered inside an old deep freezer at Nasasira Wholesale Shop.

The discovery sent shockwaves across the trading centre, with some residents initially suspecting foul play.

A section of the community alleged that the children could have been killed elsewhere and their bodies placed in the non-functioning refrigerator.

Police officers from Kakumiro District arrived at the scene and launched investigations. A sniffer dog was deployed to assist with evidence gathering as officers documented the scene.

Kakumiro District Police Commander David Otabong later dismissed claims of foul play, citing preliminary medical findings.

“Preliminary findings from the technical team from the health department indicate that the children died of suffocation,” Otabong said.

He explained that early investigations suggest the incident was accidental.

According to police, the boys are believed to have entered the unused deep freezer while playing.“It is an old, non-functioning deep freezer fitted with a locally made locking mechanism.

Once it closed, the bolt entered the hook and they could not get out,” Otabong stated, adding that the scene findings were consistent with the account given by the child’s mother.

The bodies were taken for postmortem examination as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, community leaders have urged parents and business owners to ensure that old appliances are properly secured or disposed of to prevent similar tragedies.

The incident has left the families devastated and the entire community in grief.
