MOROTO, UGANDA — July 14, 2025

A joint effort by regional security agencies has successfully recovered a stolen cow and led to the arrest of a suspect believed to be connected to previous cattle raids, underscoring renewed efforts to combat livestock theft across Karamoja.

The operation was conducted at Nadunget cattle market, a busy trading hub in Moroto District, where the heifer was positively identified by its owner, Lochugae Isaac. According to officials, the cow had gone missing during an earlier raid and was recognized by distinctive markings.

The suspect, Lomer Mark, a 27-year-old male from Lokitelakapes village, Mogoth parish, Lotisan sub-county, was apprehended at the market and is now in custody. Authorities are investigating his connection to cattle rustling activities and his possession of stolen livestock.

“This successful operation demonstrates our commitment to fighting cattle rustling and restoring security for livestock owners in the region,” said IP Longole Mike, Public Relations Officer, Mt Moroto ASTU.

Cattle rustling remains a significant challenge in Karamoja and neighboring districts, disrupting livelihoods and fueling insecurity. Recent multi-agency patrols and market surveillance have led to increased recoveries, and this latest case signals growing cooperation between security forces and local communities.

Officials praised the vigilance of community members and thanked traders who assisted in the identification process. Security teams continue to encourage timely reporting of stolen animals and suspicious behavior at markets and border points.

The suspect is expected to appear before local authorities once investigations conclude.
