KAMPALA — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pardoned jailed businessman Muhammad Ssebuufu, according to a confirmation by the Uganda Prisons Service.

Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine said the presidential pardon is contained in the President’s communiqué dated February 21, 2026.

He did not immediately provide further details regarding the conditions of the release.

Ssebuufu’s case dates back to 2015, when he was convicted of the murder of businesswoman Betty Donah Katusabe.

The conviction followed a high-profile trial that drew significant public attention due to the nature of the crime and the prominence of the individuals involved.

At the time, court proceedings detailed allegations that led to Ssebuufu’s sentencing, marking one of the notable criminal cases in the country’s recent history.

His incarceration has spanned more than a decade.

The presidential pardon effectively sets aside the remainder of his sentence, in line with the constitutional powers granted to the Head of State to grant clemency.

Further details surrounding the circumstances of the pardon and Ssebuufu’s release are expected to be communicated by relevant authorities.
