Kampala, Uganda — The Uganda Police Force has confirmed that security personnel will continue to maintain a presence at the home of National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, even though authorities say he has not committed any crime.

Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said officers have been stationed at Kyagulanyi’s residence since January 15, citing ongoing national security concerns.

According to Rusoke, the deployment is part of preventive security measures aimed at maintaining stability and public order.

“The police presence is based on national security considerations,” Rusoke explained, adding that the operation will continue for an unspecified period depending on assessments by security agencies.

No Charges Filed Rusoke emphasized that Kyagulanyi is not under arrest and has not been accused of any offence. He clarified that if investigators require information from the opposition leader, he would be formally invited to record a statement through established legal procedures.

This clarification comes amid growing public debate and speculation regarding the purpose and legality of the prolonged deployment at the NUP leader’s home.

Political and Public Reactions

The continued police presence has sparked reactions from opposition figures, civil society organisations, and Kyagulanyi’s supporters, some of whom have questioned the necessity and duration of the operation.

Critics argue that extended security deployments at political leaders’ residences may raise concerns about civil liberties and political freedoms. However, security officials maintain that their actions are preventive and intended to avert potential disturbances or threats to national security.

Background

Kyagulanyi, a prominent opposition figure and former presidential candidate, has previously experienced heightened security deployments at his residence during periods of political tension, public demonstrations, and major national events.

Such deployments have often generated political debate and scrutiny from rights groups.

What Happens Next

Police say the situation remains under review and that any changes to the deployment will depend on evolving security assessments.

As of now, there are no formal charges, summons, or restrictions announced against Kyagulanyi beyond the continued presence of security personnel.

More updates are expected as the situation develops and as authorities provide further clarification on the duration and scope of the operation.
