Speke Resort Munyonyo has held a staff health camp sponsored by Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, a move that has drawn attention within Uganda’s hospitality sector for placing employee welfare at the centre of corporate responsibility.

The initiative, conducted in partnership with Nsambya Hospital, brought essential medical services directly to workers at a time when many employers are reassessing how best to support their teams.

Over the course of the week, staff from different departments made their way to a designated section of the resort where medical teams carried out a wide range of examinations.

The outreach offered blood pressure checks, diabetes screening, dental reviews, eye assessments, gynaecological consultations and general medical advice. Employees said the calm setting encouraged them to raise concerns that they often ignore due to busy schedules or financial pressures.

Management described the programme as part of a broader commitment to improving the well-being of the staff who sustain the resort’s high standards. One human resource officer explained that many health problems go unnoticed until they escalate because employees in the hospitality industry work long hours and face constant physical and emotional demands.

She noted that early detection not only benefits staff but also strengthens the overall performance of the organisation. In her view, the camp served as a reminder that employees are valued beyond their day-to-day roles.

Industry analysts say initiatives of this kind are becoming more visible as companies respond to the realities of a workforce that faces increasing pressure. The collaboration with Nsambya Hospital added a layer of professional assurance to the exercise, with health experts not only examining staff but also providing guidance on nutrition, mental wellness and preventive care. Staff said the interaction helped them understand health conditions that are often overlooked until they become more serious.

Sudhir’s involvement reflects a philosophy that has shaped many ventures within the Ruparelia Group, where emphasis is often placed on nurturing the people who maintain its business operations.

Those familiar with the resort’s management say the health camp fits into an approach that recognises employees as a central pillar of the institution’s success. They argue that investing in wellness creates a motivated workforce that is better equipped to maintain the standards that have made Speke Resort a leading name in Uganda’s hospitality industry.

As the sector continues to adapt to changing economic and public health conditions, the Munyonyo initiative offers a glimpse into how major establishments may recalibrate their priorities. Staff who took part said the camp left them more confident about their health and more connected to the institution they serve. Although managers have not provided details on future activities, they suggested that this outreach is part of a continuing programme aimed at ensuring staff receive regular support from both the resort and external medical partners.
