The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is bracing for a decisive electoral showdown as key figures within its leadership vie for coveted positions in the party’s top organ, the Central Executive Committee (CEC).

On Tuesday, three senior NRM stalwarts—Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Godfrey Kiwanda Ssuubi, and Lydia Wanyoto Mutende—formally declared their intentions to seek re-election to the influential committee. The announcement was made during a joint press briefing held at the NRM Secretariat in Kyadondo, Kampala, where the trio presented a united front while also affirming their individual ambitions.

Dr. Baryomunsi, who currently serves as the NRM vice chairman for the Western Region and is also the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, said his experience in both government and party structures positioned him well to continue steering the party’s strategic direction.

“The NRM is entering a critical phase as we prepare for the 2026 general elections,” Dr. Baryomunsi stated. “We need experienced, tested leaders who understand the pulse of the party and the people. My track record speaks for itself.”

Godfrey Kiwanda, the NRM vice chairman for the Central Region and former State Minister for Tourism, emphasized his grassroots mobilization credentials, noting that the strength of the party lies in its connection to the ordinary citizen.

“This is not just about positions,” Kiwanda said. “It’s about energizing the party from the bottom up. The Central Region is pivotal to NRM’s success, and I have worked tirelessly to ensure we remain dominant here.”

Lydia Wanyoto Mutende, a seasoned diplomat and chairperson of the NRM Women’s League, highlighted the importance of inclusive leadership, particularly the role of women and youth in shaping the future of the party.

“We must build a party that is representative and forward-looking,” she said. “My experience in diplomacy and governance has taught me the value of dialogue, unity, and vision. I am committed to ensuring women have a strong voice in the NRM’s leadership.”

Over 100 Candidates Eye CEC Positions

According to the NRM Electoral Commission, over 100 candidates have been nominated to contest various CEC positions, setting the stage for one of the most competitive internal elections in the party’s recent history. The elections are scheduled to take place on August 27th& 28th, with delegates from across the country expected to cast their votes.

CEC, the highest decision-making organ of the party between national delegates’ conferences, plays a critical role in shaping policy, mobilization strategy, and political messaging ahead of national elections. As such, these elections carry significant weight not just within the party, but also in the broader context of Uganda’s political landscape.

NRM Electoral Commission chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, said the commission is prepared to conduct free and fair elections, urging all candidates to adhere to the party’s code of conduct.

“We have instituted transparent systems to ensure every delegate’s vote counts,” Odoi told reporters. “The NRM remains committed to internal democracy, and we call on all aspirants to campaign responsibly.”

Intrigue and Expectations

Analysts believe the elections could also serve as an early indicator of potential realignments within the ruling party, particularly as President Yoweri Museveni, the NRM’s long-time chairman and Uganda’s president since 1986, faces questions about succession and future leadership.

“The CEC elections are not just about individuals,” said political analyst Dr. Gerald Werikhe. “They are about who controls the levers of power within the NRM and who sets the tone going into 2026. If the incumbents retain their seats, it signals continuity. But new faces could shift the balance.”

For now, as campaigns intensify across the country, the NRM faithful are watching closely. Will the incumbents hold onto their influence, or will a new crop of leaders rise to redefine the ruling party’s trajectory?

The countdown to August 27&28 has begun—and with it, the stakes have never been higher.
