Breaking: Nakawa Market Engulfed In Flames, Millions Of Property Lost

In the early hours of Monday morning, tragedy struck Nakawa Market in Kampala as a raging fire tore through the bustling stalls, leaving behind a trail of destruction and despair. Vendors, now faced with the daunting task of rebuilding their livelihoods, are counting losses reaching into the millions of shillings.

The inferno, whose origin remains a mystery, erupted at approximately 4 am, swiftly engulfing various sections of the market located just a stone’s throw away from Kampala’s central business district. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and helplessness as flames consumed the market, reducing years of hard work and investment to ashes.

Despite the rapid response of the police fire brigade, led by Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Mr. Luke Owoyesigyire, the inferno proved relentless, devouring property indiscriminately. While thankfully no fatalities were reported, the toll on the livelihoods of the vendors is immeasurable.

Speaking on the incident, Mr. Owoyesigyire emphasized the importance of preemptive measures, urging market management and building owners nationwide to prioritize safety protocols such as the installation of fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems.

This devastating incident comes hot on the heels of recent turmoil within Nakawa Market. Just days prior, the market’s chairperson, Joseph Mudhasi, found himself embroiled in legal trouble after allegedly assaulting Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) staff. Mudhasi, now remanded to Luzira prison, faces charges including malicious damage and assault.

Nakawa Market, renowned as one of Kampala’s largest food markets, has long been a vital hub for fresh produce from Eastern Uganda. However, recent conflicts led to its management falling under the jurisdiction of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
