Kampala: The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has issued a public apology after one of their official vehicles was involved in a tragic accident at Kibuye roundabout, Kampala. The incident, captured on a bystander’s phone camera and widely circulated on social media, has sparked outrage.

The collision occurred when an ODPP security backup vehicle, registered as Reg. No. UG 1059 J, collided with a motorcycle carrying a woman and her school-going child. The crash has reignited concerns about road safety and the conduct of government drivers on Ugandan roads.

DPP spokesperson Jacquelyn Okui expressed sincere regret over the incident, stating, “The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) expresses its sincere regret for the traffic incident that occurred this morning at Kibuye roundabout wherein one of the ODPP security backup vehicles collided with a motorcycle carrying a woman and her school-going child.”

Efforts are underway to provide support and assistance to the victims, with Okui mentioning that they have reached out to the affected individuals and are cooperating with law enforcement to manage the situation.

This incident adds to a series of similar accidents involving government vehicles in the past. In June 2020, a government vehicle was involved in an accident that resulted in the death of a five-year-old child and serious injuries to others. Similarly, in December 2023, a police patrol car was involved in a fatal accident with a soldier.

The ODPP emphasizes the importance of road safety and pledges to take appropriate measures to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future. However, concerns persist regarding the frequency of such accidents and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations among government drivers.
