Kaliro District, Uganda – Saturday, January 13, 2024

In a distressing turn of events, two primary school teachers from Kaliro District in eastern Uganda have been apprehended by the police on charges of aggravated defilement involving their own pupils.

Busoga North Police Spokesperson, Michael Kasadha, identified the accused as Protus Fumbula, 27, a teacher at Home Darling Primary School, and Grace Mukabire, 35, a teacher at Kaliro Church of Uganda Primary School. Both educators are currently in custody and are set to face charges related to the alleged defilement of their students.

According to Kasadha, Mukabire is accused of defiling his 15-year-old Primary Six pupil during the second term of the previous year. Meanwhile, Fumbula is alleged to have defiled a 14-year-old Primary Seven candidate in the third term.

The arrest of Fumbula followed a peculiar incident where the victim disappeared from her parents’ home on January 6, only to be found at her teacher’s residence two days later, watching a movie. The suspect was subsequently apprehended and is currently detained at Kaliro Central Police Station, pending further investigations.

In a separate case, Mukabire reportedly initiated a sexual affair with his victim, even providing the pupil with his telephone contact to facilitate communication. The situation unraveled when the girl excitedly shared details of her relationship with her sister. The matter was promptly reported to Ivukula Police Station, and the case file was transferred to Kaliro CPS. Mukabire was subsequently arrested and is also in police custody.

Expressing concern over the escalating cases of aggravated defilement involving pupils, Spokesperson Michael Kasadha called on the public to actively collaborate with stakeholders to combat this alarming trend. He emphasized that such incidents severely undermine the well-being of the girl child.

An anonymous Education Office official strongly condemned the actions of the accused teachers, labeling their behavior as unprofessional and contradictory to ethical standards. The official expressed disapproval of teachers exploiting their positions and called for collective condemnation of such acts, emphasizing the negative impact on the future of the affected girls.
