Student leaders at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) have issued a three-day ultimatum to the Ministry of Education, urging them to appoint a new principal for the institution.
This comes after the end of Prof. Wasswa Balunya’s tenure in May 2023.
The student leaders argue that MUBS students are currently facing various challenges that cannot be adequately addressed by the acting principal, Prof. Moses Muhwezi, due to his limited powers.
They believe that the appointment of a new principal is crucial to ensuring effective leadership and the resolution of pressing issues affecting the student body.
MUBS, a prestigious institution known for its excellence in business education, has been grappling with several issues in recent months. These challenges include infrastructure, deficiencies, inadequate resources, and administrative inefficiencies.
The student leaders argue that these problems require strong and visionary leadership to address and overcome.
According to the student leaders, Prof. Muhwezi’s interim leadership has not been able to provide the necessary solutions to these issues. They believe that a permanent principal is needed to bring fresh perspectives, implement necessary reforms, and create a conducive learning environment for the students.
In their ultimatum, the student leaders have called on the Ministry of Education to expedite the appointment process and ensure transparency and fairness in the selection of the new principal.
They emphasize the need for a leader with a proven track record in academia, administration, and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by MUBS students.
The student leaders have further expressed their willingness to engage in constructive dialogueand collaborate with the Ministry of Education to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of operations at MUBS.

address the immediate concerns but also pave the way for long-term improvements and advancements in the institution.
The Ministry of Education has yet to respond to the ultimatum issued by the student leaders. However, it is expected that they will take the matter seriously and work towards resolving the situation promptly.
The appointment of a capable and qualified principal is crucial to maintaining MUBS’s reputation as a leading business school and providing students with the best possible education and support.
The student leaders remain hopeful that their demands will be met within the stipulated deadline, and they are prepared to take further action if necessary to ensure their voices are heard.
